Donaldson graduated through the Port Vale junior squad to sign first team forms in July 1954. After making his debut in May 1955 he had to wait until August 1957 to play another game. He played the 1957–58 season as a right-back, but lost his place the following season. In August 1960 he was sold to Exeter City for a £2,000 fee and later played for Chester, Macclesfield Town and Stafford Rangers.[1]
